MIT(Massachusetts Institute of Technology) is one of the world’s most famous universities, with a strong emphasis on scientific and technological research.

MIT OpenCourseWare (MIT OCW) is an initiative of the MIT with the intent to put all of the educational materials from both its undergraduate- and graduate-level courses online, free and openly available to anyone. This project is considered to be a free and open web-based resource center for publications of MIT course materials, which also includes the lecture notes, textbooks written by MIT professors, and streaming video lectures . Everyone who is intersted in learning can access it for free from anywhere.

According to the website of the OCW Consortium, an OCW project:

  • is a free and open digital publication of high quality educational materials, organized as courses.
  • is available for use and adaptation under an open license.
  • does not typically provide certification or access to instructors.

This OCW project was announced in October 2002. As of August 2008, there are over 1800 courses available online now. Some of the courses have corresponding lecture videos that you can view online and download for offline usage. The quality of those courses which include complete materials is very high, and many of the lecturers are extremely compelling, although I found the speed of streaming is not so fast sometimes. Many video and audio files are also available from iTunes U, which is one item in iTune Store and hosts free educational videos and audios such as course lectures, language lessons, lab demonstrations, sports highlights and campus tours provided by many top US colleges and universities.

With the educational resources available like OCW and iTunes U, the Internet has become a really wonderful place to learn, to share and to grow.
